Len Singer, MD FACS

After almost 20 years in private and academic practice of surgery, and in the aftermath of the events of September 2001, Dr. Len Singer switched to his second career in which he describes his role as: “agent of change at the busy intersection of healthcare, medicine, nursing, EMS, public health and emergency management”.

As a FEMA Senior Medical Officer, Dr. Singer was deployed with his DMAT (Disaster Medical Assistance Team) to: (2004) the Republican National Convention and Hurricane Francis response in Port Ste. Lucie, Florida; and (2005) Hurricane Katrina response in Biloxi, Mississippi. He was a subject matter expert on major projects with the CDC (pandemic planning) and the California Department of Public Health (surge capacity). Dr. Singer currently holds two academic appointments: Voluntary Assistant Professor, Department of Emergency Medicine, University of Cincinnati, College of Medicine and Adjunct Assistant Professor, Department of International Health and Development, Tulane University, School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine.

Dr. Singer taught disaster-related courses for the Departments of Justice, State, Homeland Security, HHS and DOD, and has authored curricula and exercises for medical students, nurses, Emergency Medicine residents, senior elected officials and public health. He is currently teaching at the graduate level at the Boston University School of Medicine.
